January 9th ~ Martyr´s Day in Panama

On January 9th, Panama celebrates Martyr's Day which is a day commemorating the riots over the sovereignty of the Panama Canal Zone in 1964, also known as the Flag Incident. On this day, students were killed and the Panama flag had been ripped, therefore, they use this day to reflect on that event and mourn those who had lost their lives due to that tragic event in history. By celebrating, people may lay wreaths on the memorials of those that lost their lives, and speeches are given in honor of those students.

The History

Protests had broken out in the Canal Zone, and before John F. Kennedy was assassinated, he was going to release an order that allowed the Panama flag to be flown next to the USA flag, in the Canal Zone at all times. But, the order was not yet released or carried out before he was killed. So, Robert J. Fleming, the Governor, changed Kennedy's order to make sure that no flags were flown in that zone.
