They now sell very good metallic spray paint. There is one brand of chrome paint (Google bestchromepaint) that has somewhat of a mirror finish. There is also gold and bronze. So, for instance, you can pick up thrift store ceramic horse and spray it to look like a metal sculpture.
Even a plastic rose sprayed gold would be beautiful.
