January 2nd ~ Heroes’ Day / Ancestors’ Day in Haiti


January 2nd in Haiti is known as Heroes Day, also known as Ancestors' Day. This is a day that people in Haiti celebrate and remember those who have fought with Haiti to gain their independence from France. The previous day, known to several as New Year's Day, is also Independence Day for Haiti, which of course is the day that Haiti gained its freedom from France.

The History

France has taken over Haiti and was given the name Saint-Domingue. While the French were ruling this country, the slaves were hard at work as they were being forced into farming work. Growing and harvesting Sugar Cane. It is known and said that the slave system in this colony was the toughest and harshest with a higher death rate involved.

From 1791 to 1804, the slaves began to fight to gain their freedom from the France colony. And during 1791, over 100,000 people were part of this revolution. The next year, France sent troops to put a stop to it and regain authority. On January 1st of 1804, Haiti got a new leader who declared that the country was Independent and thus gained its freedom from France.
