January 4th ~ Day Of King Amador in Sao Tome and Principe
On January 4th, in Sao Tome and Principe, they celebrate Amador Viera. He helped the African slaves escape to freedom and later declared himself to be king of this country. During the years 1595 and 1596, the Angolars started ruling and taking over this island under the authority of Amador Vieira. However, on January 4th, 1596, the Portuguese captured Amador and executed him. So, now, the island celebrates this date every year in honor of him.
Because this is a public holiday to be celebrated, schools and government buildings, and offices will be closed on this day.
The History
It is unknown how the Angolars began to take over Sao Tome. There are several theories, however. One of the most told theories says the Angolars were slaves and their captors, or masters, brought them to the island where they have shipwrecked and then, of course, took over the island. It was also said they could have also escaped around the year 1470, which was also around the time that the Portuguese also found the island.Summary
