January 7th ~ Victory Over Genocide Day In Cambodia

Each year in Cambodia, on January 7th, they celebrate Victory Over Genocide Day. This is celebrating the end of the Khmer Rouge Regime in 1979. At the time, an organization had very cruel ways of running the country. They wanted to take babies away from their mothers and turn the country back into an agricultural culture. And over time, within four years, the population, about 25% of it at least, of the country decreased due to starvation, illnesses, or execution. In order to celebrate this day, the country may have special memorial services in honor of those who risked their lives for the country. Speeches, candlelit vigils, and rallies are also part of the celebration.

The History

During the Vietnam War, Cambodia was basically the Headquarters for army forces or operations. The Army at the time was called the Red Khmer and they continued their genocide for those four years mentioned earlier. At least, until Vietnamese troops had begun to defend the country against the Khmer on January 7th, 1979. And on April 17th, 1979, the Khmer would surrender and Cambodia was safe from them, finally.
