January 7th ~ Constitution Day in Ghana

On January 7th, Ghana celebrates Constitution Day every year. On this day, they recognize the enactment of the 1992 Constitution. Ghana will usually celebrate with speeches, feasts, and parades along with any other festivals, as well as businesses, schools, and other government buildings, being closed for the day. When feasting, they will usually dine with friends and families. Traditional foods that may appear in these meals include Jolof Rice, Fried Fish, Omo Tuo, which is a staple food created with rice, and Tua Zaafi, usually made with flour and water.

The History

On April 28th, 1992, the fourth Constitution of Ghana was officially adopted and was used on January 7th. This was after the three other constitutions were refused and proved meaningless by military coups. In the next year, 1993. Ever since that day, Ghana celebrates the constitution every year, on the same day, January 7th.
