January 9th ~ Peace Agreement Day In South Sudan

On the day of January 9th, 2005, Sudan was given a Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) which ends the Second Sudanese Civil War. It was signed by both the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM). During the celebration of this day, most of the businesses are closed in the capital of Juba. While doing so, people can spend time with family and friends and listen to speeches that are given.

The History

The first Sudanese Civil War was between 1955 and 1972, the second war began in 1983, then, due to the agreement, it ended in 2005. And according to the agreement, the country's Independence would be temporary, lasting 6 years. However, a type of "election" came up with the question if Sudan should be permanently Independent or not. When the vote was live, almost everyone in South Sudan had voted for their freedom. Therefore, South Sudan became independent on July 9th, 2005.
