Lesson 1: Starting out Sun Nov 11, 2018 2:11 pm
Welcome to Witchcraft year 1!
Before we dive on into the year with history and meditations, I think we need to learn a little bit about the basics.
Let's get to it!
Magic? Magik? What's the difference?
Alright! If you want the short answer, it simply that 'magic' refers directly to stage magic where the magician is pulling a rabbit out of the hat. And on the other hand, 'magik' refers to actual spells and rituals that witches and wiccans perform. They usually spell it that way, however, on various sites, you will see the different spellings of the word. So, you might be asking yourself now, what is the correct spelling of 'magic'? Well, it doesn't matter. You can spell it however you want. Magic. Magik. Majik, Magick. It doesn't matter as long as your magik works for you.
What is Wicca?
This is a term you will hear or read quite often in your time of learning magik and witchcraft. I have even used it in this lesson. Wicca is not a type of magik, nor is it a ritual. It is a religion. Despite all rumors and beliefs, they do not believe or follow through with the devil. It is not an 'evil' religion. Wiccans actually worship nature the most, therefore, they celebrate all four seasons including a count of four other holidays, however, they don't always fall on the same day, similar to Easter. These holidays are known as Sabbats or Sabbaths. Some of these witches also celebrate lunar dates, also known as Esbates. Now, this part might surprise some of you. There are exactly 13 moons per year, one per month. And you might be saying, but, there are 12 months. Well, there are 13 months on the pagan calendar instead of 12 like the original calendar.
Wiccans also follow one simple rule at all times: "harm none". Wiccans give their lives to help all and keep all safe. They do not intend to harm anyone, including all animals. Which is why they must attend to love spells, luck spells, friendship spells, ectera.
The Wiccan law states:
Abide the Wiccan law ye must, in perfect love and perfect trust. Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfill: ‘An’ it harm none, do what ye will.’ And ever mind the rule of three: what ye send out comes back to thee. Follow this with mind and heart, and merry meet and merry part.
Who can be a witch?
Witchcraft is the study and the use of magik. The Earth, this planet that we live on, is the power source for all the magik that we use. Therefore, that is where the magik comes from. Witches usually use magik to help nature, to help each other, but, if someone doesn't not respect, it cannot help them. Witches that go on to be very powerful and strong, have a very good and strong connection to mother Earth. If you are one of them and have a connection to the planets and animals, then you are or will be, indeed, a powerful witch. Magik should not be played around with. It is a serious event that could either take, leave, or harm anyone if not careful. It is very important that you know what you are doing and what you are getting yourself into, including all consequences that may turn up. Practice makes perfect. The more you practice, the better you will get and the more experienced you will be. Overall, in other words, anyone can be a witch as long as they respect nature and its forces.
Now, the million dollar question. Can you be a witch and not be Wiccan? Yes. Yes, you can. You don't even have to have a religion path to be a witch or to study witchcraft.
Now that you have a basic idea on what magik is, you can move forward onto the next lessons. Also, in upcoming lessons, everything I just mentioned will be discussed in more detail. This was just the overview of it all.
