Lesson 3: The Materials Sun Jan 20, 2019 1:33 pm
Materials
In this lesson, we will be talking about different materials that you can use during spells and rituals along with more tips and alternatives for you to use if you don't have access to the materials that the spell or ritual calls for. This is a bit long but it covers everything you need to know about gathering your ingredients.
Your Materials
Stones (or crystals)
Stones, or crystals, are really pretty when it comes to just decoration. However, when using them for rituals or spells, they can hold some great power in them. Although, unlike other materials, the stones can last forever and never be used up after one or two times of using it. Although, you can "recharge" a crystal or a stone if you feel like you need to. There are a few ways you can do this but most people just leave it out in the moonlight or put it in naturally flowing water like a stream or a creek, not tap water.
Herbs
Herbs have been around for centuries. Women would use them for medicine or cooking for the most part but they are also great with spellcasting. Usually, you will see dry herbs being used the most because they last longer than most herbs do and they are a bit easier to store. However, if you can get fresh herbs, maybe from your garden or from the grocery store, that would be even better.
Candles
Candles are a great way of casting spells and helping you stay focused. You can also personalize the way you work with them. Like, picking out the colors based on what you intended purpose is for the spell. If you get scented candles it works out just as well, as long as it matches up with your intention. If you choose to work with white candles, you can use them for multipurpose options which is great when you have so many intentions with your spells. You can even use your own oils to put a scent to them. You get your task done and your environment will smell nice.
Oils and incense
Speaking of oils, this is another great tool when spellcasting. However, there is no difference between this and herbs. The energy is the same and it almost comes from the same source, which is plant energy. They work just as well as herbs do, maybe a little better. Some prefer to work with oils other than herbs and some would rather stick to herbs. You may even use both if the spell calls for it. Incense is about the same as oil just in a different form, so it is really just using one or the other and still getting the same result.
Your Wand
Using, when you hear the word "wand", you think of the fairytale wand with a stone at one end of the wooden stick. Your wand can be anything you want it to be. Any shape, any form (wood, metal, etc). Anything you feel drawn to, then make it your wand.
Chalice
A chalice is just a fancy word for a cup. It represents water. Usually, a chalice is a goblet of some kind, but you can use any kind of mug or cup to use. You would use a chalice for holding water to use during the spell or ritual, but you can also use it to hold wine or a different kind of celebration drink.
Pentacle
A pentacle is another word for a pendant. A pentacle usually represents the earth and is used for cleansing or consecrate other items on your altar. Some pentacle can be made out of wood, ceramic, or a type of metal.
Cauldron
A cauldron, like a chalice, represents water. Most witches don't use cauldrons but they usually them for mostly symbolism. If you can't get a cauldron, any kind of bowl or pots will work just as well. Please take note that some rituals or spells require that you burn something in your cauldron, so please choose one that can resist heat and won't melt or get destroyed after many times of using it.
Salt
During some spells or rituals, you can use a bowl of salt as an alternative for a pentacle because the bowl of salt also represent earth. Salt can be used for cleansing your other materials that have picked up negative energy in any way. The best salt used would be the coarse salt but you are free to try any type of salt that you can find.
Athame (a-THAW-may)
This is a simple ritual knife or dagger. It usually is double-edged with a black handle. The dagger represents fire and is never used to cut anything physical. It is often used to cast a circle and it has been suggested that you dull the blade so that you won't hurt yourself.
Those are the main materials used by witches. Simple spells may require simple materials like paper or a marker or something else around your household. But, when performing more advanced spells or rituals, these materials will be used frequently.
